How to Create Curb Appeal: Renovating a Small City Garden
Dear BLAQppl, This is NOT AT ALL what "deadheading" is -- but pruning (as demonstrated here) is also certainly an important step in daylily care.
Good stuff
Love when a six year old video is still helpful today! I have three bunches of Siberian Iris I got from a fellow gardener looking forward to seeing them come back to life next spring.
Will the plant grow more flowers after dead heading?
Thanks for the video that was awesome the only thing I was wondering as well when is the best time to deadhead them specially with the bees all around them all the time
What does it mean if I have multiple central stems not growing, but the opposite stems are (with no blooms)? I have a salvia memorosa “Caradonna” in a pot. I had blooms, but not anymore. Went in to deadhead but this is what i see now.

Thank you so much for a clear, concise presentation on deadheading Salvia. Looking forward to discovering additional presentations that you have done.
Thank you for the clear presentation! I’ll go try it now! 😊
Thank you!
Great video
Thank you! I love that you actually get in the dirt…..
This video doesn 't make clear WHERE on the plant to make the cut. In first example, she cuts below the double branching. In her next cut, she only cuts a single branch. Then the video speeds up and you actually can't tell where she's cutting for optimal results.
love this video
This was perfect! Thank you!
Excellent! I’m so happy this was useful to you!
I watched so many instructional videos on gardening, and I have to say you just knocked this one out of the park! Clear presentation,, video focuses when needed to highlight key information. Just as I had a question for myself you answered it every time. As a teacher and instructional designer I'm frequently frustrated by the quality of instructional videos. Thank you so much for such a helpful tool.
5/4/24. Thanks for the great info!
B.... It`s misleading. Proportion Root Soil ball/ crown is awful.
😩
Thankfully this video was the 1st result on the Google search. It may be 12 years old, but using an axe was a huge time saver.
Great information and demonstration! Thank you!
Thanks Andrew!
Does this maybe convince the olant to flower again? I've heard that works with some other flowers
No, bulbs bloom once a season. Ideally you will get a second year of bloom out of some of them. Daffodils naturalize better than Tulips. I can't get them to come back more than a year or two. You can fertilize after the the bloom or when they first start coming up. I don't find it helps mulch and feel very willing to simply add new bulbs every few years.
I could nut to this
Best month to move, (Indiana), fertilizer needed, top soil or pH control needed. Fall transplant or not? Spacing at new location ? Shade tolerant or not?
Generally I like to move them early in the growing season before the grasses have started to push up too much. That gives them the season to bounce back. They don't need a lot of amendments. They are fine in "thinner" soils. Maybe a little compost but go easy. They don't like rich soils.
@@moniqueallen2934 thanks for reply! See my photo here on plume grass in Dec
Now I know how to edge, thanks! 👍
instructions unclear; my lawn is full of cum
adding this to the edge playlist🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
will you still have the good growth in the first year? for example if the plant was growing close to 6 feet by dividing it will you get the same growth in the first year?
The growth rate of the division will be slower for about a year or so. The dividing and digging out is a disruption that slows everything down. In short order they reacclimate and establish new roots and pick up the growth pace.
thats what i was thinking too. thanks@@moniqueallen2934
Only work on wet soil, very hard on dry soil
Well hydrated - not wet. Bone dry is a mess and very wet is a mess.
Exposure to silica dust can lead to the development of lung cancer, silicosis (an irreversible scarring and stiffening of the lungs), kidney disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Yes - you are correct. Since this video was made - over 10 years ago - we've learned a lot and no longer cut this way. Safety first!
What do I do if the insides have no needles? Mine look great on the outside, but the green is only on the outer few inches. Currently large ball shape.
If you're looking to renovate a previously sheered yew, you'll have to "poke holes" in the tight canopy to allow light into the inner branching. The great thing about this plant is it will sprout new growth on old wood. It needs sunlight and adequate watering and soil fertility to do so. The pruning of these "holes" to allow light in gets the sun part handled. You can give additional water, and add compost to the soil for the rest.
i got a camillia i want to move, its too close to a rhododendron and they grow into each other, there is a perfect spot i want to prepare for it, the problem i know i will have is digging it up being that one side of it is near impossible to get too.. its a nice bush so i really want to save it, it tends to flower pink autumn early winter here in the UK. all i can do is watch more videos and try my best. But any tips would help. like what time of year would be best to move it.
Do your best to dig all around the plant. The more you avoid tearing at the roots the better for the plant. Water before you dig. That helps!
Very helpful! Thank you
Thanks so much for this. My friend gifted me two May Night Salivias and I'm really looking forward to next Spring.
Enjoy!
Looks great.
Que do muy bien el trabajo
Does this process work with Iris too?
I do cut the iris stalks down after they bloom and leave the foliage up.
Informative from a presentation standpoint, but your camera guy seems to be elsewhere😅. Especially, When you describe where to cut/deadhead flower//stem of astilbe, he’s pointing it at you and everywhere, but where he should ( area of dead-heading you’re referring to).
Thanks for the critique. It was my child! Make do with what you've got for help. Hope the point was still well made!
Thank you so much for this video. Very helpful! Will now go and cut the seed pods out.
Great video! What brand name did you use for the sand, and what color?
Polymeric sand is a type of joint sand. We use gray with bluestone.
Thank you so much!! I'm new to salvia and put some in my birder this year and after the first bloom did some investigation on what to do with the spent blooms. You video is awesome, and very clear with great examples on how to do it right without ruining the new blooms! Thanks!! Going out to deadhead them now....
It was helpful ,thank you !
Well done, accurate and really appreciate the close-up views... others just don't do this... thank you
Thanks for the encouraging feedback!
Thank you! This is very helpful.
Thank you so much, you explained and demonstrated the process beautifully and I now feel really confident to implement what you've taught me 😁
Thank you for the informative lesson, as I'm new to growing salvia.
very helpful! Thanks
Just what I needed! Well presented, thank you!
Is it easy to tell the difference between the seed clusters and the pre-bloom clusters?
Yes - the seeds are long and smooth - narrower in general. The seeds are rounder, firmer, and a bit bumpy.
Thank you very much for tips on daylilies!
